Larry Fitton was passionate about the history of Attleboro. He was easy to find most times in his role as Town Crier dressed in colonial period clothing with his handbell ringing out over the crowds at events.
This page will grow as I come across references to him. For now it is just a repository of notes and photos for me to work from.
Larry was a city employee serving as Planning & Zoning Board supervisor until retiring in 1983. Mayor Thomas Piggott formed the AHC in 1968 and Larry was an original member. As a early member of the Attleboro Historical Commission he served for over 37 years including stints in several roles, sometimes concurrently:
Treasurer, 1968 – 1978
Secretary, 1972 – 1978
After his passing in 2005 , the AHC produced a book celebrating him and his contributions in raising awareness of Attleboro’s important history.
In 2012 Mayor Kevin Dumas dedicated a portrait and marker in the old Post Office, now the Registry of Deeds.

Obituary for Lawrence R. Fitton
Lawrence R. Fitton age 89 of Parker St. Attleboro died Friday, May 6, 2005 in the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the husband of Claire F. (Gormley) Fitton. He was born in Attleboro on February 4, 1916 a son of the late Irwin R. and Louise (Lutz) Fitton. He was a life long resident of Attleboro and a former communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Attleboro. He was the office supervisor for the Planning and Zoning Board for the City of Attleboro for many years before he retired in 1983. Larry was the official “Town Crier” for the City of Attleboro and was a member of the Clowns of America under the clown name “Lookit”. As a clown and the Town Crier he participated in the Attleboro Field days and many City parades. He was a member of the Attleboro Historical Commission and the Larsen Senior Center where he would drop by almost every day where he was well known and loved by all. Besides his wife he leaves three sons Steven A. Fitton of Dallas, GA. Christopher J. Fitton of Palm Coast, FL. And Joseph E. Fitton of Attleboro, one daughter Patricia L. Reid of Plymouth, MA. Ten Grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Carl, Willard and Elmer Fitton.
