On Thursday, April 18, 2024, the Attleboro Historic Preservation Society (AHPS) presented an enlightening program titled “Keys to Unlocking the Past – Mapping Attleboro History.” The event, a captivating exploration of the rich history of Attleboro and its surrounding areas, offering attendees a unique opportunity to delve into the region’s past.
The event took place at the historic Oldtown Church (First Congregational), located at 675 Old Post Road in North Attleboro, MA. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public, making it an ideal occasion for history enthusiasts, local residents, and anyone interested in learning more about the area’s heritage.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation by Rhett Butler of E.R. Butler & Co. Butler is well-versed in the history of the region and guided attendees through a detailed overview of early Rehoboth, established in 1641, the North Purchase from 1666 to 1668, and the formation of Attleborough in 1694. His presentation focused on the history of the Robinson Family, prominent figures in Attleborough’s history and forebears to E. Robinson & Co. of Boston, MA, which operated from the 1820s to 1905. This company eventually became E.R. Butler & Co., located in South Attleboro at the historic Sadler Bros. Mill.
Rhett Butler’s talk provided a comprehensive look at the interconnected histories of these regions and the significant impact of the Robinson Family. Through maps, historical documents, and family records, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how Attleboro’s past has shaped its present.
