On Tuesday evening, February 10, the Attleboro Historic Preservation Society welcomed a full and engaged audience to the Attleboro Arts Museum for a special program exploring Attleboro’s place in the early days of the American Revolution.
Guests first had the opportunity to view the museum’s exhibit, Focus on the Past, which highlights artwork inspired by artifacts tied to America’s history in recognition of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. The exhibit provided a thoughtful and visually striking backdrop for the evening’s program, connecting art, history, and community in one shared space.
At 6:45 PM, historian Richard Foster took the podium to present his compelling talk, What if the American Revolution had started in Attleboro? Through engaging storytelling, careful research, and a touch of imagination, Foster invited attendees to reconsider Attleboro’s role in the broader revolutionary narrative. Rather than viewing history as something that happened only in places like Lexington and Concord, the audience was encouraged to see how the road to revolution also ran through our own town.
Foster’s presentation blended historical insight with interactive moments, including period music performed on traditional instruments, which brought the era vividly to life. The audience responded with thoughtful attention and lively discussion, reflecting the community’s deep interest in local heritage.
The partnership between AHPS and the Attleboro Arts Museum once again demonstrated how collaboration strengthens our ability to share and celebrate Attleboro’s story. Events like this remind us that local history is not just about the past — it is about understanding who we are and how our community fits into the larger American experience.
We thank Richard Foster for his engaging presentation and the Attleboro Arts Museum for hosting this meaningful evening. We also thank everyone who attended and continues to support the preservation and exploration of Attleboro’s rich history.
Stay tuned for upcoming programs as we continue to mark the 250th anniversary of our nation with events that highlight Attleboro’s enduring place in the American story.
