On June 19th, 2025, the Attleboro Historical Preservation Society hosted a heartwarming evening honoring one of Attleboro’s most beloved culinary figures—Robert B. Slater. Presented by local historian Peddy Dias, the event took place at the Attleboro Area Industrial Museum and brought to life the story of a man whose food, hospitality, and legacy left a lasting imprint on our community.
Slater was more than just a caterer—he was a community staple. From his early days in Crescent City, Florida, to settling in Attleboro after his 1904 marriage to Eleanor Miller, Robert Slater built a culinary legacy that spanned over half a century. Whether it was his signature chicken pie, legendary ice cream, or his service at the Highland Country Club, generations of Attleboro residents have fond memories tied to his cooking.
Peddy Dias walked attendees through rare photos, documents, and personal stories—many sourced from the Holman Collection at AAIM—that painted a rich portrait of Slater’s life. We learned about the team of loyal waitresses who worked with him for decades, the glowing articles in local newspapers, and his recognition by the Rotary Club in 1953 for outstanding service.
Events like these remind us why local history matters. Slater’s story isn’t just about food—it’s about family, community, and the power of service with a smile.
Stay tuned—an informational page on Robert Slater’s life and contributions is coming soon to our website, complete with historical documents, photographs, and more.
