This is how the arches looked after construction. The
graceful shallow curves and proportions of the original have been
distorted by the excavation of the roadway to allow all but the largest
commercial trucks to pass. The recent addition of "clothesline" style
electric railway lines and supports further diminish the elegant and
functional look of the original design.
The square has been home to a gazebo for at least 100
years as seen in these photos that also show the railroad crossing at
grade level. The long arms needed to reach across the wide roadway can
be seen in the raised position. |
